INTRODUCTION

Owing to gender identity and vulnerability status, the women self-help group members are frequently facing livelihood struggles due to single source of income. The Sri Dhanvanthri Ashramam Trust team has analysed a combination of income generation programmes and eventually subject to the suitability and requirement, they have propelled to impart training to 20 to 30 women SHG members in palm leaf products making in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. It could be accentuated that the women SHG members who gained adequate skills in the specified trade will be in the capacities to get regular source of incomes.

Systematic vertical development in the lives of the poor and vulnerable women in the focused areas is conspicuously absent. Owing to gender, caste and other inequality factors, the target women lack access to socioeconomic resources and services to improve their socioeconomic situation. Most women do not have land entitlements in their names. The target women have especially a low participation in the public domain because they are often denied access to participation owing to the male dominance.

The primary problem that this project will address is the economic deprivation of the families who live in a poor and vulnerable state, of whom the most affected are the women. Lack of skills to sufficiently engage in income generation programmes is also a major cause for hammering the women’s development. Besides, those women with skills are experiencing hardship to avail financial support in proportionate to their volume of their preferred trades. Due to their individualistic entrepreneurship, they lack the collective voice to effectively enter into open markets. Inconsistent employment, unskilled and problematic income generation programmes have a serious economic crunch on the lives of the poor and marginalised women.
